INTERNATIONAL ‘Spotlight show’ supports development and encourages girls sustained participation in sport

This Girl Can Box uses forward thinking to lead the way with grass-roots international boxing for women and girls. After the great success of ‘The Italian Job’, which offered fantastic competitive opportunities to some of our more experienced boxers (Nina Hughes, Maisey Rose Courtney, Oriance Lungu & Amy Andrew) we’re now forging forward with multi-level tournaments to increase participation, whilst raising awareness about issues in everyday society that particularly affect girls. The spotlight for this event was shone brightly on a local charity - Angelou, who help women and girls affected by domestic violence and abuse. By reaching out to our friends overseas, we can all benefit, not only in boxing but also by giving space for conversations about issues girls face and making sure there is awareness about support networks.
Firstly, the teams arrived on the Friday afternoon, which allowed for the visiting team to lead a training session for recreational and competitive boxers. This was then followed by a Q & A about international boxing and women’s growing participation in boxing overseas. Young residents and regular gym members were in attendance and keen to discuss different attitudes and approaches to sport and what it takes for a girl to develop as a higher-level athlete. We were keen to engage and empower young girls to take up sport, incorporate it regularly in their lifestyles to develop more sustained inclusion. We very much wanted this session to be a catalyst for participation and growth. A main tenet of This Girl Can Box is - ‘You have to see it to be it’ and this was the core of this meet and greet session.
The show itself saw 12 great bouts which resulted in the This Girl Can Box team overall winners 9:3
